Introduction: My overview and memory lane

Ahhh css, in today’s online environment with web development we all must know at-least some CSS. Getting by as a developer today is on one hand easier with all the WYSIWYG editors, CMS and pre-made template websites but what if your want custom development? What if you want to get into the know of creating really well formatted websites? This is where i believe it is now 10 times harder than that of say 8yrs ago!

We now have to have a varied toolbox of such items as Style-sheets, JavaScript, Xhtml and other frameworks to name just a few of the things a good web developer must have a grasp on, today lesson we’ll begin sifting through some CSS or also know cascading style sheets (CSS).

The first time i laid my eyes on CSS was way back around 2000 or HTML 4.0 days, a friend had heard about css and we grabbed the latest copy of PC User and walked through a tutorial of how to change text styles with CSS. Most small business owners get frustrated that their site either ranks highly in Bing, yet poorly in Yahoo, Alexa, Bing, Google or vice verse. There has been many times i’ve optimized for a particular search engine and noticed dramatic drops on another? WTF!! It’s mind numbing really, So to save you the time and Hair loss here are some of the most common known reasons why this may be happening to your website and more importantly an overview of some workarounds i use that i’ve picked up over the years to tackle the problems if so.

  1. The Amount of text on a page, Bing places a lot of importance on page content, so if your pages have more than 350 words then you’ll have a better ranking on Bing.  Hence the problem, in Google it doesn’t seem to be of importance the amount of text on your pages. So you need to optimize each and every single page individually, yes its a tiring job to meet all the different engines score requirements.

How to Make IE8 render like IE7 automatically

As you probably know, Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 has been released and is giving many web developers and companies with great websites viewing issues, sent sites developed for older standards basically to HELL!!

In what way i hear you asking?? well the list is an endless list, a little like that we saw when IE6 was around. Pages display totally different than which they did in IE7, yes there is a compatibility button that makes these pages show as they did with IE7 and its been one of the best features a user has in the IE8 browser. So what we have below will be a god sent to many website owners, developers, there is a META tag that you can add to and web page that makes it show as it would in IE7 without any user interactions at all.

Whats the difference? actually nothing at all, BUT what if many web users coming to your site don’t fully know how to click the compatibility button? What if they just hit the back button instead because your site looks like crap to them? Thats right, many, actually more than just many….. literally thousands of web users don’t know More >
